One such project involved a site that is located in a mixed residential and rural area in
storage tanks (USTs) that was not in operation at the time of tank removal. No buildings, dispensers, dispenser islands or parking areas were in existence or visible on site. The gas station building was declared a historic structure and removed prior to the tank discovery.
Soil samples collected during the tank removal indicated a release from the UST’s. Since municipal water was not available in the area and most residences used private water supply wells, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) classified the site as high risk, requiring immediate action.
Shield responded quickly after the NCDENR rejected a previous consultant’s work product. Shield developed a scope of work and received pre-approval from NCDENR to protect the client’s financial interests. Shield moved quickly to remove the USTs and conduct a Limited Site Assessment, avoiding issuance of a Notice of Violation (NOV) to the client, while moving the project forward to the satisfaction of the client and the NCDENR.
