Landfill Gas Testing - McDowell County Landfill

Appalachian State University contracted with Shield to assist the ASU Energy Center in evaluating the McDowell County Solid Waste Landfill as part of the development of community-based landfill gas utilization plans. Shield’s scope of work included obtaining required NCDENR permit approvals, establishment of a preliminary soil boring grid using Geoprobe technologies to map out existing methane concentrations, drilling of three extraction wells with 36-inch diameter borings, and conducting of a 48-hour methane extraction pilot test using a trailer-mounted 10-horsepower vacuum blower with generator. Methane concentrations, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other specific field parameters, were field collected through out the duration of the pilot test.
