Construction Materials Laboratory

Shield owns and operates its own AMRL/AASHTO accredited Construction Materials Laboratory to support the in-field work of its engineers and consultants.

The laboratory is staffed with experienced engineering technicians and scientists supervised by licensed professional engineers. Testing is performed in conjunction with applicable standards that include ASTM, AASHTO, USDA, local, state, and other published standards. The laboratory participates in the AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL) soil proficiency sample program as a part of our internal laboratory quality assurance to ensure the accuracy and consistency of the test results. The goal of Shield’s laboratory is to provide precise and accurate results customized to the client’s specific standards and budget in a timely manner.

Soil testing services typically are classified with the material tested: soil, aggregate, concrete, asphalt, rock, fly ash, fireproofing, slurry mixture, soil-admixture.
Some of our tests include:

• Natural moisture content
• Atterberg limits
• Shrinkage limit
• Grain size analysis
• Hydrometer
• Specific gravity
• Standard and modified moisture density (Proctors)
• California bearing ratio (CBR)
• Flexible/rigid wall permeability
• Falling/constant head permeability
• Consolidation
• Consolidated/unconsolidated triaxial sheer
• Concrete cylinder compressive strength
• Masonry/grout cube compressive strength
• Grout prism compressive strength
• Masonry prism compressive strength
