Foundation Engineering and Design

The foundation engineering design services provided by Shield Engineering are focused on analyzing and distributing structural loads from the walls and diaphragms of a structure through the foundation to competent soil strata beneath the structure. Shield performs cost effective design services that provide commercial and residential structures with the strength, durability, reliability, and serviceability for a safe and habitable structure.
The design of a structure involves the analysis of the structural components (beams, columns, joists, girders, etc.) in order to determine the internal and external forces as well as deflections at points under the anticipated design loading. These forces are determined in order to size both members and the connections between members. The deflection of members within the structure is determined to ensure a serviceable structure. 

Often the foundations of a structure are constructed on insufficient bearing material that may begin to consolidate and settle, and  could compromise the integrity of the structure if not remediated.   The remediation of the foundation can be performed by multiple means.  Shield has experience evaluating the actual site conditions to identify appropriate remediation solutions.  These solutions include soil improvement techniques, foundation modification, and foundation underpinning  designs.
